On a Wednesday afternoon, I received a text asking if I could meet with my board of directors on Friday. I was mildly alarmed, if only for the urgency, as this type of request was nothing new. As I sat in my office trying to decompress before tackling the next task of the day, I opened the text and wondered, “What is it that they want to meet about now?”
I responded to let the board director know that I had plans immediately after school on that day and that Thursday evening was my next available time. We agreed to meet. We met. They fired me. I walked away, confused.
I was the executive director of a small, independent preschool. I enjoyed my highly demanding job and career. I had a combined twenty years of experience in child care and education, ranging in working with birth to high school seniors in many capacities. I was committed not only to the children I was working with, but my staff and the families attached to each as well.
When I was let go, there came no warnings or signs. There was no conflict leading up to the firing nor were there any requests that I did not fulfill. In addition, none of the board members saw the work that went to each and every day. I worked hard, typically arriving at the school at 6 am and leaving between 6 and 8 pm. I worked hard to maintain the daily operations. I poured into the teachers and encouraged them.
I greeted each and every child every day, as well as put them in their respective vehicles at the close of the day. At the time, I was considering attending a university in order to obtain a master’s degree that would advance my knowledge in the area of education. I was also gathering information and putting systems in place to advance each worker I had employed and in the future. I was invested.

When the event took place, all I could think about was what would happen to my students and staff. The community of growth and care we had been building was about to be completely disrupted. I could only care about everyone else. I was absolutely devastated and that was before I even started thinking of what I was losing. When that kicked in, I was devastated all over again.
After the initial shock wore off a couple of days later, I took some time to pray for direction. I started asking for a renewed understanding of my purpose and where I should turn next. Let’s just acknowledge that we often receive answers that we don’t want to hear. So when the answer was that my time spent in education was well served, but done, it was a blow to my chest.
I took that answer, and many others, and dug in to find out what I was passionate about at this stage of life. I understood that passions, as well as purpose, change. What I learned in that moment was that what you’ve always done isn’t necessarily what you will always do. I took the time to think about what really brings me joy. That led me to travel.
Then I asked the question: “How do I get paid to travel?” The answer is you find a niche and you create a blog that helps others not only to find something new, but also to inspire them to seek out their own passion.
That is exactly what I have been doing and though the finances are not where I would like them to be as of yet, I am truly happy doing it. I have also built up my endurance and added to my perseverance. In addition, I have found other opportunities and areas in which to grow.

As a bonus, I have gained time in order to do something I started as a pastime years ago. In fact, we can call it a time waster when I first started because I did it out of boredom. I started writing a fiction story just to pass the time. The more I wrote, the more invested I became. Then, I decided that I wanted it to be published someday.
Fast forward ten years, after being fired and not spending twelve or more hours a day at a job, I had time to research how to publish. In my search, I stumbled upon Global Book Publishing. It was not by chance. I truly believe that. Today, I am publishing the first of a three-book series as well as organizing a travel guide to publish early next year.
Those are just a few of the opportunities that the pink slip afforded me. The biggest afforded opportunity was that I was able to intentionally work on living a joyful, peaceful, and giving life. My advice may be cliché, but it is time-tested and approved. The advice is to let your obstacles fire up your passion for your best life.
